How Chiplets are Helping to Democratize Semiconductor Design with Mohit Gupta, CEO of TYLsemi
In this installment of the C Suite Spotlight, President Justin Kinsey talks with Mohit Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of TYLsemi.
With over 20 years in semiconductors and IP development, Mohit has been at the epicenter of building some of the industry's most critical compute, memory, and connectivity ASICs and IP... long before AI infrastructure made those devices front-page news.
A lifelong engineer, Mohit led the OpenFive business at SiFive, which was acquired by Alphawave in 2022, and earlier held engineering and leadership roles at Rambus, Open-Silicon, Infineon Technologies, and STMicroelectronics.
Most recently, he served as Executive Vice President and General Manager at Alphawave Semi, helping scale their custom silicon and IP business as the company became a global provider of high-performance connectivity solutions for AI and HPC, before its acquisition by Qualcomm in 2025.
Across his journey, Mohit has been involved in more than 50 ASICs and 100 IP products. Now, he's back to what he enjoys most—building from scratch.
He and his co-founder Sunil Bhardwaj just came out of stealth with a $43M raise for TYLsemi, a company dedicated to building the foundational chiplets that will connect, power, and enable the custom compute architectures of the AI era.
Here are the questions and timestamps:
00:00 - Introduction
00:40 - Was there a moment in your life when you knew you wanted to become an engineer?
02:40 - What are some of the most important lessons you've learned about semiconductor design during your career in the IP sector?
07:12 - For those who aren't yet familiar with the company, can you tell us what TYLsemi is building?
09:36 - You and Sunil have been together at multiple companies. How does your partnership give TYLsemi an 'unfair advantage' in the market?
11:58 - Can you tell us how you came up with the name TYLsemi?
13:30 - What are the advantages of using chiplets, and what are some of the considerations that architects need to keep in mind when using them?
18:20 - Do you believe chiplets and a chiplet marketplace will enable the democratization of AI and if so, why do you believe that?
20:49 - What are some of the traits that you look for in engineers you want to join the company, and what are some that you ry to repel and keep out?
28:48 - If you had a minute to speak with an engineer who might be watching this, what would you say to shift them from curious about TYLsemi, to interested to join?
30:35 - If you look ahead 4-5 years from now, what impact do you hope TYLsemi will have made on the industry and more broadly, on humanity?
33:52 - If someone wants to get in touch with you, how would you prefer they reach out?
