Dielet

A dielet is a very small semiconductor die designed to perform a specific function as part of a larger electronic component or system. The term is formed from die and the diminutive suffix -let, indicating a die that is smaller or more functionally limited than a conventional integrated-circuit die.

Unlike chiplet, dielet does not have a single, widely accepted definition across the semiconductor industry. It has been used to describe both miniature security devices and functional dies integrated into multi-die processors.

Terminology

A semiconductor die is an individual piece of semiconductor material containing an integrated circuit. A chiplet is a modular die specifically designed to be combined with other dies in an advanced package and to communicate through defined interfaces.

A dielet may therefore be considered a type of small die and, in some applications, a type of chiplet. However, the two terms are not always interchangeable:

  • Chiplet generally emphasizes modularity, reuse and die-to-die communication.
  • Dielet generally emphasizes the die’s small physical size or its narrowly defined function.

Because dielet is not governed by a formal industry-wide definition, its precise meaning depends on the organization and application using the term.
